Tabula Rasa meaning ‘blank slate’, reflects the concept that the human mind at birth is complete, but receptive – like a blank slate upon which experience imprints knowledge. In this two channel video work, this notion of the Tabula Rasa is explored through sensory performances using floral foam and butter paper.
The participants are directed to feel at the objects in their laps, without ever looking at them. The audience watches as they sense and mould their given objects, whilst staring into the camera. Their mind was ‘blank’ when they initially entered the performance, but through the process they learn about their objects through explorative touch – echoing the moulding and forming of the mind.
