Expire

Expire comprises of four video self-portraits where I perform the acts of crying, sleeping, breathing deeply and holding my breath in order to invite the viewer to ruminate on the often overlooked effort required to breathe, and therefore exist.

Shot up close, I aim to draw attention to the process, the tension and the physical effort involved in these acts, and to reflect the odd nature of how humans exist socially. Holding our breath, we watch our actions and hide our humanity, rather than allowing ourselves to just exist.

By challenging both physically and mentally how one breathes, the audience is forced to consider the importance of a breath. A breath signifies life, and an absence of a breath is the absence of life itself.
