Shelter

Shelter (2018) is a photographic installation that focuses on the repercussions of reporting sexual assault, inspired by my own personal experience. The central motif of the work is the emergency blanket – a shiny, metallic material used in physical trauma situations for warmth and shelter, despite its materiality being uncomfortable and harsh on the skin.

The use of emergency blanket is a metaphor for the ironic situation that while the law protects victims, social judgment can be hypocritical, and mentally and physically damaging to them. The work also influenced by the political #metoo movement, it aims to incite dialogue, and to encourage people who have experienced sexual assault to find their own inner strength and courage.
