Ida: The Life She Was Given

Ida: The Life She Was Given investigates how identity, history, lineage and memory intersect, and the way our lives are shaped by the interplay of many different forces, such as chance, blood and other components of fate.

Composed of a two channel video work, this project explores the trauma ingrained in a family’s history and how that suffering is passed through generations. From the exploration of old family photographs and research, I realised a lack of accurate information regarding my Romanian/Jewish great grandmother’s life.

From there, I filled in the gaps of her past by blending fragmented family and historical media archive photographs, constructing my own narrative in one video. The second video registers a performative action undertaken by me in relationship to the trauma she experienced.
